Savvy Eco Friendly Shopping

Christmas can be a time of year where it is difficult to know what to buy and where. Shopping centers are full of crazy shoppers looking for something to buy for friends and family and it can be really hard to concentrate and find something worth spending your money on.

Finding small gifts that don’t have a negative impact on the environment can be tricky but here are my top tips.

Top Tips for Buying Eco Friendly Stocking Stuffers

Avoid Plastic Packaging

Look for products with minimal or no plastic packaging.  Making sure the gift has a recyclable cardboard package or comes with no packaging at all. That way we are not adding extra plastic to landfill and is a great method of precycling.

Look for biodegradable

Another great tip is to look for products that are biodegradable.  many products come to the end of their life eventually so knowing that they will break down into the earth, returning carbon back to the soil is a great thing.

Think bamboo toothbrushes and bamboo cooking utensils as great examples of biodegradable products that will eventually rot back into the soil.

Choose something that will help avoid future waste

What I mean is to help others replace throw away items with reusable.  For example, if you know a coffee drinker in your life who always uses throwaway cups then get them an eco friendly coffee cup and help them make the switch.  The best way to encourage others around us to swap to reusable is to give them a gift that supports this change.

Wrap Eco Friendly

To round out a well chosen eco friendly gift, make sure you wrap your gift in an eco friendly way.

Regular Christmas wrapping that gets thrown away is easily replaced by a simple, eco friendly alternative like cloth or glass jars which can be part of the gift itself.

Look for natural ingredients

Giving a gift that has natural ingredients is a great way to avoid harmful chemicals, supporting both the health of the planet and the people you are gifting to.  Giving gifts to babies made from organic, natural fibres or substances is a great way to show you care.

Choose sustainably grown

If you are gifting something made from a natural fiber (which is a wonderful thing to do) then look to see if the fiber is sustainably grown.

Great examples are bamboo, which can be grown with minimal chemicals and a single plant can be harvested over and over again. They take up minimal space which avoids destruction of more natural habitats.

Another example is Jute, which is used to make hessian.  The jute plant grows with minimal or no chemicals, is hardy, and because it is natural, is biodegradable.  Looking for sustainable grown ingredients is a great way to care for the environment.
